Sociology at the ESS
Sociology begins in S6 with a general presentation of the social sciences and the place of sociology within them. Pupils discover the principal approaches to sociology, such as holism, methodological individualism and interactionism.
The themes studied in S6 include social structure, social control, the role of the family, the media and the peer group in socialisation or, indeed, deviance. Later, in S7, they discuss the issues of social movements, conflicts and social justice.
The course sees itself as interactive, founded on frequent interactions with the pupils, in order to encourage them to question their own ideas. Work in groups and debates may be used in class.
